Silvia Violet’s Shifting Hearts

Get excited y’all! Silvia Violet is back again. While I previously interviewed her twice (and you can see them here and here) I decided it was time to change it up a bit. I asked Silvia to write a little scene where Brandon and/or Zach from her latest book Shifting Hearts meets Blake from an old favorite of mine, Astronomical. Let me be the first to tell you that I flailed like the fan girl that I am when the scene came in. It was a tall order since the Wild R Farm series is paranormal, western/cowboy romance and the other book is a contemporary, suburban romance. But in true Silvia style she stepped up and made a winner for our reading pleasure. After the scene she created, read all about the book and a lovely excerpt that makes you want to keep reading.  In a hotel in Nashville….

A man with dark curly hair raced for the elevator. Just as he got within a few steps of the doors, he stumbled, and the stacks of books in his hands slid across the floor, a few of them making it into the elevator as the doors started to close. Zach jumped forward managing to wedge his foot in the doors to prevent them from closing. He retrieved the books from the floor and handed them to the man who looked even more flustered than he had before. He just managed to squeeze into the crowded car.

“Thanks!” the man said, his dark brown eyes lighting up. Zach had to admit he was super hot and quite possibly gay. If Zach was single, he’d have been really tempted to flirt. Fortunately, his partner, Brandon, would be getting in soon. Zach had managed to convince his man to join him for the last three days of a veterinary conference. The hotel was also host to a conference for reference librarians. Zach was almost certain that was why the dark-haired man was there.

“I’m Blake,” the man said, trying to hold out a hand to shake but the crowd in the elevator and the bundle in his arms made it too awkward and he gave up.

“I’m Zach. Are you here for the library conference?”

“Easy guess huh?” Blake said, looking down at the books in his hand.

“Yeah. You’ve got quite a load there.” Did that sound as lascivious to Blake as it did to him? “Do you need some help?”

“Oh, I’m fine. You don’t have to do that.”

“I don’t mind. I’ve got some free time right now,” Zach said.

“Really?”

“Sure. Where are you headed?”

Blake scrunched up his face like he was contemplating the answer. “Conference room D or maybe it’s E. I’ve got to set these up on a table”

“No problem. I was just headed to the lobby bar.”

When the elevator opened, Zach took half the stack of books and helped Blake place them on a table. They appeared to be a sampling of reference guides about reference guides. Blake decided he’d rather stick with compendiums on the commons diseases of farm animals.

“Join me for a drink?” Zach asked when they were finished.

Blake looked uncertain “Um…”

Zach realized Blake would assume Zach was asking him out, unless he was reading him wrong and he wasn’t gay. “As friends, I’m… I’ve got a partner.”

“Me too,” Blake said, looking relieved. “And yes, I’d like that.”

Whew! Zach had guessed right. “This way then.” He gestured in the direction of the hotel bar.

***

Over an hour later, Blake and Zach were still talking. Zach had learned that Blake’s partner was an astronomy professor at LSU and Blake worked at the library there. He’d told Blake all about the Brandon and Wild R Farm. Blake hadn’t even batted an eye when he learned Zach’s partner was a shifter. Of course, Blake was going out with a kilt-wearing astronomy geek, a really, really hot one, but still.

An angry snort startled Zach. “What’s going on?”

“Brandon.” Zach stood, hoping to head off a misunderstanding.

Brandon glanced from Zach to Blake and back again.

Blake jumped up from his seat. “You must be Brandon. Zach was kind enough to help me with some books.”

“That damn well better not be a euphemism,” Brandon growled.

“Um…”

Zach was mortified. “Brandon, quit being an ass. Blake is here for a library conference. And his partner sounds a bit like you.”

Blake laughed. “Yeah, I see the resemblance.”

“Dominant and over-bearing?” Zach asked.

“Well… yes.”

Brandon made another snort at Zach, but he turned to Blake and smiled. “I’m sorry. I just drove in after a long day at work and when I saw you two together… It was stupid to make assumptions.”

Blake grinned. “You’re forgiven. Zach’s told me all about you.”

Brandon groaned. “Really?”

“Really. Well, I’d better be going. Maybe I’ll see you around before the conferences end.”

“You don’t have to run off. I really don’t bite,” Brandon said.

“Much,” Zach replied.

Blake looked unsure. “I promised my niece I’d call. She’s looking after Greg for me.”

Zach laughed. “I hope he’s not giving her too much trouble.”

“Hopefully not. Have a good night!”

“You too.”

Brandon watched him go. “He’s…”

“Hot in a nerdy librarian way.”

“Yep. That’s it,” Brandon concluded.

Blurb:
After experiencing what happens when someone you love walks away and never looks back, Brandon decided love was for fools. Then he spent a summer with Zach. He struggled against feelings that grew every time he and Zach were together, telling himself they were just having a fling. When Zach confessed his love one hot summer night, Brandon panicked. He scoffed at Zach and made sure he walked away first.

Three years later, their paths cross again when Zach becomes the vet at Wild R Farm where Brandon works. Brandon realizes his feelings haven’t changed, but Zach treats Brandon with scorn despite Brandon’s every attempt to show Zach he’s no longer the self-centered man he used to be. When a night out ends with Brandon driving Zach home, confessions are made on both sides, and hope begins to build in Brandon’s heart.

Excerpt:
Brandon settled his and Zach’s tabs and managed to get Zach to his truck without incident. “Did you drive here?”

“Nope, Martin picked me up.”

Brandon snorted again. Fucking Martin. The two of them together was so not going to happen.

Zach giggled. “I’ve always loved it when you go all ferocious stallion.”

Oh fuck. “Just get in the truck, Zach.” Brandon helped him step up and maneuver himself into the passenger seat.

“It’s fucking wrong.“ Zach said as he laid his head back on the seat.

“What is?”

“That you’re so fucking hot.”

No. No, no, no. This was not happening. “Just close your eyes and stop talking. You’ll be better off that way.” Maybe he’d pass out and then Brandon’s dick could stop reacting to his soft words and beautiful eyes and everything that made him the only man Brandon really wanted.

“No, I’ll forget it all. Best thing about being drunk. I might as well say what I want because who will care later.”

“I will.”

“Nah, you never did. That’s what makes it so unfair.”

Brandon rubbed his forehead, trying to ward off a massive headache. “You’re wrong about that. I—”

“What? You didn’t mean to look at me like I was a bug you wanted to squash when I said I loved you?”

“You’re drunk. Really fucking drunk, and I’d be an idiot to say anything now. More of an idiot than I already have been and—”

“Fuck, you’re babbling.” Zach looked extremely amused.

Brandon scowled at him. “Nope, it’s your imagination”

“It’s not.”

“Yeah, it is”

Zach grinned. “You could kiss me to shut me up.”
