I am very excited to have Morticia Knight back again. Her newest book Secret Fire is out now. I know I can’t wait to read it. Police officers and firemen. What more could you ask for? Not much in my opinion! Below you will find all of the details about the book. Plus there is an excerpt that you can only read here (trust me, you’ll love it like I did!). When a mutual friend suggests Fire Marshal Daryl, Zach assumes he must be joking. The surly marshal has given cranky a new meaning. It’s unfortunate, though, since he is one fine-looking man.

Daryl has sworn off relationships ever since he caught his ex-partner cheating. He’s always taken everything in life seriously—from jobs to relationships—and is afraid he might be alone in that regard. Certain he can’t risk love again, he panics when he sees his secret crush Zach approaching him at a police versus firemen softball game. He’s nervous, as he is socially challenged with a tendency to blurt out the wrong things. It gets worse when he realises their shared buddy gave Zach a push. He assumes that Zach is only talking to him out of pity.

Zach has been pissed off at Daryl ever since they got into a verbal sparring match at the park. Yet, when Daryl comes to his aid during an explosive fire, Zach wonders what secrets might be hidden beneath the layers Daryl has built to protect himself from the world—and love. A night of passion turns into the possibility of something more as they struggle to find their way to one another. But all of that is threatened when there is a devastating fire that causes many people to lose their lives. As they work together to uncover the truth, someone thinks they’ve asked too many questions—and plans to stop them before they can ask any more.

Excerpt:
Daryl marched to the van where he’d left Zach earlier. As he rounded the back of the vehicle, he spotted Tom and Zach arguing. Or more accurately, Tom pleading and Zach choking and gasping.

“What the fuck is going on here?”

Tom jumped. Zach barely reacted and Daryl noted he seemed more sluggish then when he’d last seen him.

“I can’t get him to listen to me.” Tom moved closer to Daryl so that he was the only one that could hear him. “He’s a bit loopy, he’s not making sense.”

“Obviously he took in more smoke than he was aware of. And God only knows what types of chemicals were released immediately after the blast. Where’s Terrence? Why hasn’t he taken him?”

“He and his partner Gary are checking the guys that were fighting within the structure. Zach refused further treatment. Except every time he goes to get up, he slumps back down.”

“Fuck this.”

Daryl waved over to another medic at an ambulance parked nearby, staying on scene in case of further unexpected injuries. The EMT trotted over. Daryl stuck his arm underneath Zach’s and yanked him to his feet.

Zach frowned at him, but didn’t say anything. Daryl was alarmed at the redness of his eyes and soot around his nostrils. He needed a chest X-ray, blood tests and an oxygen reading at the very least. Daryl knew everything there was to know about smoke inhalation injuries and treatments.

“What are you doing?” Zach barely croaked out the words.

“Possibly saving your life, you little shithead.”

Zach sputtered then began hacking again, his attempt at a response thwarted by another coughing fit.

When the medic was within hearing distance, Daryl called out to him.

“I need a gurney now!”

Daryl grasped Zach around his waist and took one of Zach’s arms and brought it across his shoulders so that he could support him better. Tom rushed forward to help.

“I got it.”

Daryl half led, half dragged Zach towards the emergency vehicle. It was clear that Zach no longer had the strength to fight him, his adrenaline most likely tapped out. The EMT met him part of the way, and Daryl gently laid Zach down on the stretcher, the medic lifting Zach’s feet up until he was securely in position.

“This is ridic—”

“Shut up. You need immediate medical attention. Don’t give anyone any trouble and I’ll take you out for a beer when you’re better.”

Daryl could see the questioning expression on Zach’s face as he gazed up at him, then a barely perceptible nod. Zach’s eyes closed and his head lolled to the side.
