Rebecca Cohen’s Idolatry

It’s really no secret how much of a fan of Rebecca Cohen’s books I am. I’ve read almost everything she’s written and have enjoyed all of it. The first book in the Reagalos series was so good, I can’t wait to read Idolatry, the second one. Rebecca was kind enough to share an excerpt that you can only find here on my blog. It’s a good one too! I got very excited when I read it and wanted to know what happened next. Read all about the book and at the very bottom enter to win an e-copy of both books in the series, Servitude and Idolatry.

Blurb:
Upon taking the throne as High Lord of Katraman and Liege of Scura, Lornyc Reagalos’s focus on rebuilding one city and reassuring another leaves little time for his husband, Methian. Added to that, he must contend with is the unexpected revelation that his grandfather, Romanus, set up his own religion and named an enigmatic figure called The One as its deity. Through some twisted interpretation of the signs left by Romanus, the Cerulean Cult comes to believe Lornyc is their god and invites him to sanctify the Cult as part of its five-hundred-year anniversary. During the Sanctification Ceremony, the Cult’s holy relic, an orb given to it by Romanus, is split, releasing an entity that tears a hole in the dimensions. The species that guards the dimensions, the Valen, force Lornyc to fix the breach, or they will have him extinguished.

Excerpt:
Methian examined the journal. “How’s something this old survived without any damage?”

“There’s a low-level magic charge on the surface and woven into the paper, some sort of protection spell.”

Methian settled himself on the bed, and Lornyc picked up the journal he’d been reading before Methian arrived. It was the sixth one he’d tried, and he now knew more about his grandfather’s sex life than he’d ever wanted to.

Lornyc scanned through the first twenty pages. There were snippets here and there, alluding to something that would supply Romanus with revenge after being greatly wronged. What exactly the great wronging was hadn’t been forthcoming, and Lornyc couldn’t help the foreboding that lodged in his stomach. He turned the page and realized he was right to be concerned. she’s concerned, as she didn’t make a fuss about it. Make yourself useful and start reading.”

Methian took the journal with a sigh. “What should I be looking for?”

“Anything that mentions the Cult or Iconis. And keep an eye out for references to the Valen as well.”

I have found a way to appease myself and repay the debt I owe a good friend. The time has come for the Lake to wake up and realize the importance of the Reagalos family. See the power we possess and our application of it. To be truthful, I don’t give a rat’s ass about what the outside world feels about us, but this endeavor should at least highlight to some people the worthiness of my kin.

It is quite a simple plan. Although I won’t see the endpoint, I will most certainly enjoy the setup and bask in the idea of what it will accomplish. I have already prepared the adverts for the newspapers. In but a few short weeks, we will see if anyone has taken the bait. The idea itself evolved over an evening where I found myself with only my own bad-tempered company and a bottle of mead. To me religion has always been a belief in something untenable. A pleasant but unexplainable happening becomes something to be worshiped. So, with a few manipulations of my abilities and the right wording, I should be able to amass a group of followers.

I will present them with an orb, say a few ritualistic words, and disappear. The founder of the Cerulean Cult, the Holy Profit, will turn up, say his piece, and disappear into the night, leaving behind a load of false teachings and Brother Garret to be their guiding light.

Add in a few mentions of a superior being named The One—unoriginal but a necessary facet for the farce to work—and sit back and watch the Cult grow.

“Oh fuck!”
