Mila McWarren’s The Luckiest

Mila McWarren  has a brand new book out now that sounds adorable. The Luckiest is a new adult book that I cannot wait to read. She stopped by today for a super fun interview that I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed doing. After the interview, read all about the book and an excerpt that makes you want to know what happens next. At the very bottom, enter for a chance to win an Interlude Press giftcard, or one of five copies of the book.

Amanda C. Stone: Good morning Mila! I’m so glad you joined me today!
Mila McWarren: I’m glad to be here!
ACS: You’re going to a naughty costume party, what do you go as?
MM: Oh my god, do I have to go? 🙂 I’ve become such a homebody – if I’m not going to be home by 11, then I’m not sure I’m up for this affair.
ACS: I’m such a homebody too. You’ll definitely be home by 11. My parties don’t last that late.
MM: OK, but assuming I have to go, then it’s probably for work (I am kind of an asshole and very little else will blast me out of my house after 8 pm), so I’m going as a naughty scientist – lab coat, glasses, and very little else. As a bonus, it would probably make Tim Wise cry, so there’s that, too.
ACS: A naughty scientist would be so much fun. You can get so much mileage out of “Is that a pocket protector or are you just happy to see me?”. Oh the bad puns are endless! If your house was on fire and you could grab only 2 things before leaving, what would they be?
MM: I’m going to assume that all the living beings are already handled and that I’m such an efficient hero that now I have time to go back in for lagniappe. So here’s my list:
My laptop, because that’s where all the secrets live, obviously.
The hard drive of dubiously obtained Canadian and British television of the 00s, because back in the day that shit was a pain to collect and I am old enough to continue to mourn the death of megaupload.
ACS: I am so glad I’m not the only one that misses megaupload and the large amount of “file locker” websites that were around in the early 2000s. Ah, those were the days. There is magically 25 hours in a day. What would you do with the extra hour?
MM: I never have enough time for anything so I feel this one; it’s a lot of pressure! So I’m cheating: I’m sleeping. Definitely. I average about 5 hours a night and if I could sneak one more hour in, I would probably be much more pleasant to be around, and everybody wins! It’s for the good of humanity, I swear.
ACS: I’d probably spend my extra hour sleeping as well. For humanity’s sake of course. You are traveling with The Doctor (or any other time traveling person). Would you visit the past or the future?
MM: OK, so (a) I choose to travel with the 10th Doctor, because his hair was truly magical.
ACS: Such a fan of 10. Good choice of travel companions.
MM: And (b) we are going to the future, because in the Doctor’s timelines we seem to have one, and even if it’s fucked up it’s there, and I find that super encouraging.
ACS: When you get back from your trip to the future, let me know when we make it out of our solar system. If you were a candy bar what would you taste like?
MM: Like too many things at once. Like desperation and laughter, with a soupcon of hard work and a faint whiff of daydreams.
In real terms: I would be one of those Take Five bars, that has pretzels and peanuts and peanut butter and chocolate and caramel in every bite. Those things are a hot mess of delicious, throwing everything in all at once and leaving it to the eater to sort it out, and I so relate.
ACS: I love take 5 bars. They’re so good and so hard to find. Thank you for stopping by! I loved having you!
MM: This was fun! And now I’m going to go find a candy bar… 🙂
ACS: I’m coming too. Err, yes, interview over. Read all about the book y’all. WAIT FOR ME!

Blurb:
When New York-based memoirist Aaron Wilkinson gathers with his high school friends to marry off two of their own, he is forced to spend a week with Nik, the boy who broke his heart.

As they settle into the Texas beach house where the nuptials will be performed, Nik quickly makes his intentions clear: he wants Aaron back. “He’s coming hard, baby,” a friend warns, setting the tone for a week of transition where Aaron and Nik must decide if they are playing for keeps.

Excerpt:
Aaron finishes the song and Stephanie snatches the mic out of his hand, crooks her finger at Nik and launches them into a reprise of their performance of “Dancing on My Own” from the homecoming weekend they all spent here at the house back in senior year. Stephanie still has questionable rhythm and tragic pitch—she loves to sing, which is why they have a karaoke machine in this house, but it’s one thing she will admit she doesn’t have much of a gift for—but there’s a reason Nik majored in music at The University of Texas, and his voice has come a long way.

Somehow, this deliberate throwback to a memory that was never anything but happy seems different than what Aaron has just done. He sits on the sofa, flanked by Alex and Jasmine, hating them both a little for participating in it even while he smiles. Nik dances—how can you not, with this song—but he still watches Aaron, gives him a little head-tilt during the chorus, and it’s charming and devastating and infuriating.

Jasmine leans to murmur, “Oh, I see how it is.”

“Oh, shut up.”

You might not be desperate, but I’m not sure about him. He’s coming hard, baby.”
